Who?
Who needs a Driver CPC?
From September 10th 2014, all LGV drivers must hold a Driver CPC as without this, they will not be allowed to drive as a profession.
Driver CPC covers all vehicles from 3.5 tonnes GVW to 44 tonnes GVW. This does not apply to LGV drivers who are not being employed as a driver, for example, a scaffolder or Marquee erector, where driving is secondary.
It is always better to get qualified and stay qualified, to ensure you are covered whenever you drive, you never know when you might need it.
Why?
All the information you need for Driver CPC for Lorry Drivers
Driver CPC (Driver Certificate of Professional Competence) is a new qualification for professional bus, coach and lorry drivers.
The Driving Standards agency is implementing EU Directive 2003/59 which requires all professional bus, coach and lorry drivers to hold Driver CPC in addition to their vocational driving licence.
The Driver CPC for bus and coach drivers was put in place on the 10th or September 2008 and Driver CPC for lorry drivers will be put in place on the 10th of September 2009.
In order to maintain their Driver CPC, all category C and D license holders (including C, C1, C1E and D, D1, DE, D1E) will be required to undertake 35 hours Periodic Training every 5 years. That equates to one 'Driver CPC training day' per year.
Driver CPC also introduces a new Initial Qualification for drivers entering the industries after these September dates, and which they must complete in order to drive professionally.
The main aim of Driver CPC is to improve road safety, providing a qualification to drivers which will help improve road safety and reduce road casualties. It will also create an improved professional and positive image to the industries.
The Driver CPC systems ensures that the skills learnt are maintained and developed throughout the driver’s working life.
Any lorry over 3.5 tonnes and minibuses with 9 seats or more are covered by Driver CPC if driven in the course of work.
